Not that many years ago I stumbled into a beautiful ’69 Duetto in a back alley of Berserkly, a stone’s throw from my office. This chance encounter introduced me to a vibrant subculture of Alfisti laying just below the petro-culture surface of AMGs, R32s, M3s and P cars roaming about. I longed for something truly analogue in an increasingly digital world. And, I craved for la dolce vita… Three Spiders, two GT’s, and a Giulia later I found myself with three Duetto in various stages of restoration, yet without a running Alfa.
You see, last year a friend and I started a venture we’re calling the Duetto Rescue Society – we’re going to unreasonable and illogical lengths to find and rescue neglected S1 boat tails ’66 – ’69. While researching a Duetto in need of rescue, this particular ’71 screamed out to me from the east coast: “please bring me to a sunny place and play with me…” Yes, that’s right, this one found me. We took this slightly neglected S2 to our favorite Alfa whisperer and now she purrs and growls on demand, whilst hugging the corners with sure footedness. We felt beholden to fix the one blatant rust spot, and then we drove her until we all smiled profusely. Now though the first Duetto from the Duetto Rescue Society is nearing completion (plus my daughter’s tuition is due), so this S2 is ready for a new steward.
