The vintage Alfa Romeo Duetto stands as one of the most celebrated sports car designs of the post-war era, born from a collaboration between Alfa Romeo and the renowned coachbuilder Pininfarina. Introduced in 1966, the Series 1 “boat tail” Spider embodied the elegant proportions and flowing lines that defined Italian automotive design in the 1960s. Yet despite its glamorous debut, the Duetto soon faced challenges. Changing U.S. safety and emissions regulations, the adoption of SPICA fuel injection, and the replacement of the original rounded tail with the more practical Kamm tail marked the beginning of a long decline. Subsequent redesigns, reliability concerns, and poor rust protection further damaged the car’s reputation and resale value.

By the 1980s and 1990s, many Duettos had become inexpensive used sports cars, often neglected because owners could not afford the specialized maintenance and extensive rust repairs they required. As corrosion, mechanical issues, and deferred upkeep took their toll, countless examples disappeared from the roads. Ironically, this period of neglect ultimately contributed to the model’s rarity. Today, surviving Series 1 Duettos are highly sought-after collectibles, valued for their historical significance, timeless design, and direct connection to Alfa Romeo’s original vision. With relatively few examples remaining in original or properly restored condition, appreciation for the model continues to grow among enthusiasts and collectors.

The Duetto Rescue Society was founded to preserve and restore these iconic automobiles. Dedicated to rescuing neglected Series 1 Duettos built between 1966 and 1969, the group documents, rebuilds, and thoughtfully upgrades each car while preserving its distinctive character. Projects begin with sourcing abandoned or stalled restorations, followed by a complete disassembly, body restoration, and mechanical rebuild performed by skilled Alfa Romeo specialists. By combining original parts, quality reproductions, and carefully selected modern improvements, the Society creates Duettos that remain faithful to their heritage while offering improved reliability, safety, and drivability. The result is a renewed appreciation for a car that remains one of the defining icons of Italian automotive artistry.
